The film Vampire by John Carpenter is loosely based on Steakleys novel Vampire $. Steakley's first publication was the short story The Bluenose Limit in the March 1981 issue of Amazing Science Fiction. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from Southern Methodist University. Steakley spent most of his life in Texas, interrupted by brief stints in South America and Hollywood in his youth.
